4 Reasons to Choose Central Over Mini-Split Ductless Air Conditioning

Central and mini-split ductless air conditioners both work by drawing warm air in, releasing it outside, and spreading cool air inside. However, central air conditioning systems use only one indoor unit for an entire property. That single unit cools and filters the air in a central location, then distributes it through ducts using powerful fans. In contrast, mini-split ductless systems use a separate indoor unit for each room.

While mini-split ductless air conditioning does offer some benefits, many homeowners still find that central air conditioning makes more sense. Here are just four reasons why.

1. Less Expensive

Compare central air systems against mini-split ductless and you'll notice the latter are typically far more expensive. The initial upfront cost can make mini-split ductless systems hard to justify, especially since costs will increase for every single room you'd like to cool. When you're dealing with anything more than a small apartment, those costs can really add up. Additionally, many properties already have ductwork, which makes the installation of central air systems even more affordable.

2. Less Conspicuous

The indoor units used by mini-split ductless systems are smaller than the single large units utilized by central air systems, but that doesn't mean they are less conspicuous. Since indoor units need to be mounted in every room, they are far more visible. If you dislike the idea of air conditioning units interfering with your interior styling, central air systems are probably a better bet. All they will require is a vent.

3. Superior Air Quality

Air conditioning systems should filter as well as cool air. Mini-split ductless systems don't perform as well in this regard since smaller indoor units are less effective at filtering air. In contrast, central air systems circulate air through your entire home and can use their more powerful fans and bigger filters to deliver air that is free from harmful or irritating particles. This should be a particularly attractive benefit if you suffer from any allergies.

4. Reduced Maintenance

Having more than one indoor air conditioning unit means there are more things that can go wrong, so you'll generally need to pay more attention to mini-split ductless systems. Additionally, filters will need to be washed out more regularly since they tend to become clogged with debris more easily than those in larger central air units. While upkeep is never going to be backbreaking, it makes sense to choose central air conditioning if you want to keep maintenance requirements to a minimum.
